A total game-changer for the Tops and the Motown label generally. It stayed at No 1 in the US and UK for three weeks, and reached No 1 in many other countries as well. The composers (Holland-Dozier-Holland) purposely tried to take lead singer Levi Stubbs out of his comfort zone vocally so it would enhance the 'pleading' aspect of his delivery. It worked and the rest is history.
