Originally written by Gainsbourg for his then girlfriend Brigitte Bardot, this much talked-about version was banned from broadcast on release in several countries including the UK. Despite that, it spent an amazing 31 weeks on the UK Charts in 1969, and was the first 'banned' record to hit No 1.
